Earth Overshoot Day 2021: it is July 29

Today, 29 July, is Earth Overshoot Day, also earlier this year than the previous one, the day when the Earth runs out of resources for the whole of 2021. And towards COP26, the "100 Days of Possibility" campaign is launched.

29 July 2021

After the pandemic caused a decrease in the use of resources in 2020, the world returned to business as usual and matched the worst result ever – Earth Overshoot Day is again on July 29. The earliest date ever was first recorded in 2019.

Last year Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 29, this year the day the Earth ran out of all annual resources falls even earlier. Today, in fact, July 29: the Planet, as we have been witnessing for decades, goes into credit – starting from tomorrow – on the resources of the following year, thus demonstrating that there is an over-exploitation of the resources available and “on loan”.

Among the main causes of over-exploitation, we find deforestation, the carbon footprint due to the intensification of human activity.

By reducing emissions, by halving them, Earth Overshoot Day could be reposted. This is what explains the Global Footprint Network which launched, in view of COP26, the 100 Days of Possibility campaign precisely because there are just 100 days to go before the Conference of the Parties. held in Glasgow.

For a hundred days of possibility, the Network will highlight the answers from below and the ways in which in every country, in every city or company, it will be possible to prepare in a world where the overshoot day is always in advance. The answers with #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day can be found every day on the Global Footprint Network website.
