Lower Embodied Carbon Emissions

“Lower Embodied Carbon Emissions” is an annual project (January 2022 – January 2023) jointly run together with Legambiente aims to inform and raise awareness on the issue of embedded carbon emissions in the Italian building sector.

Building sector is the main one source of energy consumption throughout Europe, accounting for 40% of all energy consumed. Three quarters of this energy, in fact, comes from the direct use of fossil fuels, causing 36% of the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire sector.

Emissions from construction materials contribute 10-20% of the total carbon footprint of buildings in the EU. The theme of lower carbon emissions embedded in the construction sector is not currently discussed in the Italian public debate. On the efforts to reduce greenhouse gases – with the exception of the Green Building Council Italy (GBC) since 2019 thanks to the publication of the World GBC Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront report.

This scenario is due to three main reasons: a lack of knowledge and awareness on the part of political decision makers and the media, the influence of the fossil fuel lobbies that does not allow a real public debate on this issue, with consequent resistance to change and the slowness of the construction sector to embrace innovation.
