The Working Group Agriculture and forests aims at supplying technical and scientific support on the current and growing future roles played by agriculture and forestry to mitigate climate changes.
The WG operates on the basis of standard international standard terminology (IPCC, UNFCCC). For this reason it may also be identified with the AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land-Use) acronym.
To inform and raise awareness of Members and public opinion on the role of agriculture and forestry in reaching the emission reduction targets set by the Kyoto Protocol and in the climate changes mitigation and adjustment policies;
To spread agro-forestry potentials in reducing greenhouse gases emissions and energy saving practices in agricolture and forestry;
To support Members and public opinion in defining emission reduction strategies in the agriculture and forestry sectors, in line with EU and internationally agreed guidelines.
In order to outline a strategy to develop voluntary credits from the agricultural and forestry sectors, the priority will be to strengthen synergies with the main national actors. This will be useful to provide inputs to national and EU decision-makers towards incentives to both sectors within the european climate policies.
